Do you like jazzy, relaxed Christmas music? Here’s to you the 2008 release by Ohio based duo Over The Rhine (Great name for a band, at least for me, I live in Cologne on the Rhine) with 12 original Christmas songs, infected by smooth jazz, blues and singer/songwriter-rock.
Though some songs may be a bit too Norah Jones for me, others have far more of Ani DiFranco (in a good mood). This is one of the best Christmas releases you can find on Noisetrade. Check out the sad “All I Ever Get For Christmas Is Blue”, the jazzy standardish “Snowed In With You”, the bluesy “North Pole Man” or the beautiful title track “Snow Angel”, a perfect ballad with a hint of the young Joni Mitchell or Regina Spektor.

Winter is nearing, you can smell it, when you’re outside, at least here in Germany. Christmas is drawing nearer. Christmas will be in less than a month, can you believe it? Sufjan Stevens made music fans all over the world the wonderful early Christmas present. Take from his recently released 5-EP-Collection “Songs for Christmas II: Sliver & Gold” he compiled a free download sampler which can be downloaded at noisetrade.com. 12 tracks = one hour of festive, yet not corny at all modern Christmas music. Get it now, don’t let them annoy you with another year of “Last Christmas” trash…

Ikos - Christmas Carols And Songs
A beautiful 2002-release by London based band project Ikos (featuring guest appearances byThe Choirs of Peterborough Cathedral, Jane Siberry and others) led by multi-instrumentalist David Clifton, somewhere between traditional christmas music, acoustic folk and electronica. An atmospheric, elegant, very festive, yet surprisingly un-kitschy release. Listen to the arrangement of Handel’s “For Unto Us A Child Is Born” from the Messiah. Wonderful!
You can get a special radio mixes EP too:
And oh: Almost forgot: Merry Christmas everybody …

Joel Rakes - the best-ish of... festive.mood.inducing.music
Joel Rakes has this thing for Christmas music. He has been recording and releasing free Christmas EP’s during the past four years, becoming on of the most popular sources for free Christmas music on bandcamp.com (You can get them all at http://christmas.joelrakes.com). This year he didn’t release new recordings, but he managed to put together a best-ish of his festive mood inducing music.
If you haven’t heard his stuff yet, this very fine collection is a good introduction.
